San Angelo man charged with theft of birth certificates, social security cards

A San Angelo man has been charged after Social Security cards and birth certificates, some for children, were stolen, it says.

SAN ANGELO — A San Angelo man faces 25-99 years in prison after a bag containing identification documents belonging to women and children was found, according to an indictment report released on Jan. 6, 2021.

Around August 31, 2021, police found a man carrying a bag containing Social Security cards, birth certificates, driver’s licenses, checks, debit/credit cards and a passport, it said.

The man told police that another man gave him the bag, which contained:

  • 3 birth certificates
  • 13 social security cards
  • 1 passport

Some of those items belonged to two women and their children. The women told investigators that their vehicles had been broken into, and that was when the items disappeared, according to the affidavit of the arrest.
