New stimulus measures in 2022? Here’s the latest news from Congress

A new round of coronavirus stimulant could be on the way.

Democratic and Republican Legislators have sparked early discussions about a new round of potential coronavirus stimulus spending, especially with the ommicron variant sweeping across the United States, according to The Washington Post.

  • The aid would specifically help businesses such as “restaurants, venues, gyms and even minor league sports teams” that could face problems from a new wave of COVID-19. The Washington Post reports.
  • The expenses would be a mix of new releases and repurposing of previous unused releases.
  • It’s unclear whether the new spending round would include stimulus to the American people.

The White House said: it is in constant communication with lawmakers about a new round of stimulus, per Reuters.

Sens. Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland, and Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, lead the conversation, hoping to help restaurants in need, according to Business Insider.

  • “We started with restaurants, but we are ready to expand if we can get the necessary support,” Cardin said Wednesday. “There are other industries that have legitimate concerns.”

Republican Senator Kevin Cramer, of North Dakota, told Insider he is open to a package that will also help restaurants.

  • “I’d be open to reasonable discussions on a two-pronged basis,” Cramer said.
