The stimulus checks are intended to provide assistance to low-income households affected by the ongoing Covid pandemic.

California Governor Gavin Newsom approved about $12 billion in Covid relief.

The Golden State Stimulus II (GSS II) payments began in October 2021 and will continue through January 11, 2022.

The checks are sent by zip code.

The last round of checks began shipping on December 27, 2021 to eligible residents living in an area with a zip code ending in 928-999.

The tax authorities said those who receive a paper check should be aware that it can take up to three weeks after they are sent.

Who is Eligible for a Golden State Stimulus II Payment?

You must have $1 to $75,000 in California Adjusted Gross Income (CA AGI) to qualify.

The income portion of CA AGI includes wages and self-employment income, tips, interest, dividends, rental income, retirement income, and gains on real estate sales.

if Social Security is your only source of income, you does not receive payment.

Some people who receive Social Security income may qualify because they receive other income listed above.

You must also be an eligible California resident and have filed your 2020 taxes by October 15, 2021.

The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) says it has made a total of 8.5 million GSS II payments.

When will I receive my check?

Payments are sent according to the last three digits of the zip code on your 2020 tax return.

Some payments may require additional time to process for accuracy and completeness.

If your tax return is processed during or after the date of your scheduled zip code payment, please wait until 60 days after your return has been processed.

The remaining zip codes ending in 928-999 will now be sent through January 11, 2022.

Most direct deposit stimulus payments were issued between September 1, 2021 and October 31, 2021.

If you filed your tax return after September 1, 2021, please allow up to 45 days after your return has been processed.

The FTB says it processes a small number of tax returns that, for a variety of reasons, require additional processing to ensure they qualify.

In addition, a number of Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN) have until February 15, 2022 to file their state returns to be eligible for GSS II.

These are ITIN applicants who did not have an ITIN, but applied for one before October 15, 2021, the tax return deadline.

What if I owe money?

The California Franchise Tax Board says the Golden State incentive payments should not be set off against debts owed to the Franchise Tax Board or other government agencies.

The only exceptions are orders related to child support, spousal support, family benefits or criminal restitution to be paid to victims.

If you believe that your Golden State Stimulus payment deposited with your financial institution has been improperly levied or frozen, you should contact your financial institution.
